Break Glass Bolts
The Modern Break Glass Bolts
Break glass bolts of today have been modified to use ceramtubes for safe and accurate semi-automatic mechanism of panic bolt open system. The old type of break glass Redlam panic bolt using glass tube is no longer fit for today’s fire safety standards in Europe.
Those that are left in a few buildings were either converted to use ceramic tubes or totally replaced. It is highly recommended to phase out old types to avoid compromising safety of people who will use it during emergency breakdown. Buy only the complete set with the right accessories for assurance: see below.
Accessories List
Hammer and Chain – Break glass bolts come with hammer and chain used to break the ceramic tubes. A chain is attached to the hammer to avoid loss and easy access in an emergency.
Ceramic Tubes – The most important accessory for modern break glass bolts is the ceramic tube. This is a replaceable part when used or broken. Make sure you always have the spare all the time.
Padlock and Key – Panic bolts such as those that use break glass ceramic tubes may come with an optional lock and keys.
Bolt Keeper – Container for the bolt.
Clips – For fixing the hammer right next to the panic bolt unit.
To Open Break Tube Sign – This extra accessory is a must. This signage as well as others for modern fire safety gadgets should be “glow in the dark” type. The purpose is to easily see the sign in case of a power failure under emergency or fire incident.
Double Sided Tape – Otherwise known as double adhesive tape, this is used to attach or securely mount the fire exit signs described above to the wall.
User Instruction and Installation Guide – Any product must have this accessory to help users and installers understand how use it or properly put the break glass bolt in place.
Description and How to Use MK1 and MK2
MK1 and MK 2 is a popular type for Redlam bolt. Both are available in dimension - L185mm x D55mm x W75mm for the panic bolt unit and L127mm x D17mm for the ceramic tube. Both come with the same accessories listed above but have different use with fire exit doors. Both MKI and MKII are used to for internal emergency exits in which the design is intended for interconnecting emergency exit doors. MKII operates in internal side by breaking the ceramic tube. On the other side, you have to push the knob.
Understanding Basic Operation
It is always important for people who reside or work in a building to have basic knowledge on how panic bolts operate. Although a user instruction will suffice, some companies and building owners dedicate a short seminar to help people understand basic fire prevention procedures and operation of different fire safety equipment. This includes break glass bolts.
Another effective way is a procedure called fire drill. I used to work in a hotel and we have this training in a regular basis and it helped us follow the correct procedures during an actual fire incident. Fire drill, is an opportunity to learn how to use basic equipments and tools for fire safety the proper way and it should include actual demonstration and procedure for operation.
